Tropical Malaysia is blessed with natural beauty and has been a popular tourist destination for all. Our rich multi-racial culture on top of the exquisite culinary experience never fails to awe. Our cityscape is a blend of modern skyscrapers and pre-war architectural heritage. Our tropical forests are the home of many endangered species while our coast lines are dotted with beautiful islands of pristine sandy beaches and rich marine life.
Unfortunately, the inconsistent service level is putting a huge dent in the tourism industry's efforts to draw in more tourists. We often read of letters to editors in news dailies, complaining of their unpleasant experiences while holidaying in Malaysia. We read about tourists getting cheated, robbed and some even disrespected by the authorities.
It is unacceptable that this developing nation of ours still turn a blind eye to bad customer service, especially those in the service industry. We just received an email from an Australian tourist who had just left Malaysia with an extremely poor perception of our country.
Not only did she have to suddenly fork out additional money to a travel agency for a travel package where the price was already fixed, she did not even get to enjoy what the package promised! Can you imagine the widespread damage when she tells her friends of how horrible Malaysians treated her?
On one hand we have the tourism board spending millions of Ringgit to court tourists into visiting our country only to have them suffer such unprofessional service attitudes. Why aren't the authorities doing something more to protect the rights of our guests? How could we invite them with open arms and then slap them with lousy behaviour?
Is this the best that we can do for ourselves? Is this the best that we can do for others? Is this the best that we can do for our country? You decide.
