KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia has lost the bid to host one of the three qualifiers for the 2012 London Olympics. India and Japan, however, were successful with their bids while the hosts for the third qualifiers will be announced later.
The decision was made by the International Hockey Federation (FIH) executive committee when they decided on the hosts for their major tournaments over the next four years.
Bidding for one of the qualifiers was a priority for the Malaysian Hockey Federation (MHF) as their target is to regain their place in the Olympic Games.
The national team are currently playing in the Asian Games in Guangzhou where the winners will gain an automatic berth for the London Games.
If India or Japan win the gold medal in Guangzhou then their host job for the qualifiers will be given to other countries.
The third qualifier job is expected to go to either Europe or South America depending on the teams who have qualified. That will not be known until the end of 2011.
MHF secretary Hashim Mohamed Yusof yesterday confirmed that Malaysia had made an official bid for one of the qualifiers.
“It looks like we will have to wait and see how the qualifiers shape up and which teams make the cut. We still stand a chance but it will depend on which of the three qualifiers we end up in.
At the same time it will also depend on how India and Japan do at the Asian Games,” said Hashim.
The FIH have also awarded the 2013 Junior World Cup to India. The 2014 men and women’s World Cups will be held in Holland.
For the Junior World Cup the FIH did not specify whether they will retain the 16-team format or revert back to 12 teams.
The Junior World Cup in 2009 was co-hosted by Malaysia and Singapore and the FIH made an exception to increase the number of participating team to 16 to accommodate Singapore and Malaysia as host countries.
The FIH are expected to make a final decision on the formats later next year.
