Petaling Jaya, Nov 12 - DAP Parliamentary Leader Lim Kit Siang has slammed Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak for the latter's recent tolerance of racial slurs and anti-1Malaysia sentiments, especially after Barisan Nasional's by-election victories in Galas and Batu Sapi.
The Ipoh Timor Member of Parliament (MP) observed that two days before the Nov 4 by-elections, the PM was "reaching out" to the Chinese community in his World Chinese Economic Forum speech saying that Malaysia have been successful due to the expertise and dedication of the Malaysian Chinese community.
"Unfortunately after the by-election victories, Defence Minister Datuk Seri Zahid Hamidi insulted Malaysian Chinese and Indians when he told the Parliament the non-Malays were not patriotic enough to participate in the military.
"UMNO-owned newspaper Utusan Malaysia then carried a prominent article which described May 13 as "a sacred day" and a day to be celebrated," Lim said in his statement to the press, adding that Najib owes the public an explanation.
Lim also expressed regret that his supplementary question to Deputy Home Minister Datuk Abu Seman in Parliament on Thursday (Nov 11) was disallowed by Speaker Tan Sri Pandikar Amin.
"I had wanted to know whether the joint committee set up by the Home Ministry to deal with offensive, sensitive and seditious media reports, would act on Utusan Malaysia's article that glorified May 13 as "a sacred day" - when it was in fact, the blackest day in the history of Malaysia, which saw many Malaysians of all races, killed.
"As Utusan Malaysia is UMNO's mouthpiece, the article must be taken even more seriously as it is tantamount to a public repudiation of Najib's 1Malaysia policy.
"How can the Prime Minister expect his "inclusive" 1Malaysia concept and policy to command credibility as well as national and international confidence?" he asked, likening the flip-flop attitude of Najib's administration towards the 1Malaysia concept, to the dual personality of Jekyll and Hyde.
